monks' small terrace houses at Khangmar Monastery

Looking up over the rooftops of the small, rammed-earth houses where the monks live, toward the utse, the top temple far up on the hill. To the right, are the ruins of Jhilu Rinpoche's la-rang (house), destroyed during the Cultural Revolution. It had been a very dry summer and a bad harvest; the usual vivid green landscape is greatly muted and the dryness and dust clearly visible. It was much warmer than we expected in autumn!
