The Good Fortune Trust is an Australian initiative that supports Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns — inside Tibet and in exile in India. The Good Fortune Trust is rebuilding Khangmar Monastery, a small and very poor monastery in eastern Tibet. It is the home monastery of Geshe Tashi Tsering, the Trust’s patron and inspiration. The conditions at Khangmar Monastery and the nearby Jhilu Ritrek Nunnery are very primitive. Thanks to the kindness of Westerners, the Trust is able to provide basic food and medicine and essential utilities like running water. As funds become available, maintenance and repair work is being carried out on the dilapidated buildings. The Good Fortune Trust is also funding literacy programmes that will underpin the establishment of advanced formal study at the monastery. Many boys and young men continue to leave Khangmar Valley and go into exile in India, where they have the opportunity to participate in traditional Buddhist studies at the monastic institutions re-established in southern India. Geshe T ashi Tsering finished his geshe studies at Sera Je Monastery and he still maintains a house there. He shares responsibility for hundreds of monks studying at Sera Je, most of whom are now assisted by individual Western sponsors. The Good Fortune Trust is physically based in south-east Queensland, Australia but its supporters come from around Australia, New Zealand as well as the United States, India and other parts of the world. The Trust was established in 2002 to provide a structure for the sponsorship programme which had organically developed as Geshe Tashi Tsering’s Western students sought to support Tibetan monks and nuns. Keep in touch Statement of purpose (a) by providing material support and education to Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns studying and practising in monastic institutions in Tibet and India; and so that Tibetan monks and nuns may be able to study and practice without interruption or obstacles in order that they may go on to benefit others by their example, by teaching and by upholding traditional practices and institutions. What we do The Trust also receives general donations for the benefit of monks covered by the sponsorship programme. These support essential building works and infrastructure development. We also solicit donations from Western benefactors in order to provide material assistance and education programmes to Khangmar Monastery and Jhilu Ritrek Nunnery, in Kardze, in eastern Tibet. Donations provide basic food, essential repairs to buildings, development of infrastructure and education in basic literacy and buddhadharma. How we work |
